St. Martin im Kofel, with its 120 inhabitants and pilgrimage church "Zum Heiligen Martin" is one of the prettiest places to visit in the South Tyrol. The church was probably built over a pagan sacred cave. The present building, which incorporates the cave, dates from the 16th century. Farmers in particular used to make pilgrimages to this ancient site to pray for their animals.
St. Martin im Kofel, nestling by the fascinating Sonnenberg, is the ideal starting point for easy walks to the cafés, but "conquerors of the peaks" will also find it worth their while.
